御代官私領者領主地頭え申出夫より江戸等惣て
筒井伊賀守番所え可申出候若及見聞候ハゝ
其段と可申出候尤家来又者等迄入念可遂吟味
候隠處脇より相知候ハゝ可為曲事候

近来百姓町人共身分不相応大造之葬式
致し又ハ墓所え壮大な石碑を建院号
居士号等附け候趣も相聞如何之事二候自今
以後百姓町人共葬式ハ例縦令品有式者
由緒有之者二而茂集僧十僧より厚執行
をいたす間敷施物等も分限二応寄附

貼り式名え院号居士号等決而附申間敷候
尤是迄取来候石碑等其段差置追而修覆
等之節院号居士号相除石碑取編候様可

【右丁】
御代官、私領は領主・地頭へ申し出て、そこから江戸などすべて筒井伊賀守番所へ申し出るべきである。もし見聞きした場合は、その段階で申し出るべきである。もちろん家来または家来等まで入念に吟味を遂げるべきである。隠れ処から脇より知ることがあれば、曲事となるであろう。
卯四月
近頃、百姓・町人ともに身分不相応な大規模な葬式を行い、また墓所へ壮大な石碑を建て、院号・居士号等を付ける趣も聞こえるが、いかがなことである。今後、百姓・町人ともの葬式は、例え縦令品のある式者・由緒のある者であっても、集める僧は十僧より多く、厚い執行をしてはならない。施物等も分限に応じて寄附すること。

墓碑のことも、高い墓石でも四尺を超えてはならず、戒名へ院号・居士号等は決して付けてはならない。もちろんこれまで取り来たった石碑等はその段階では差し置き、追って修復等の節に院号・居士号を除いて石碑を取り替えるようにすること。
右の趣旨を御領・私領・寺社領ともに漏れることなく触れ知らせるものである。
四月
右の通り公儀より御書付が出されたので、町中へ触れ出すべきである。以上

If anyone sees or hears anything, they should report it at that stage. Of course, retainers and their subordinates should conduct thorough investigations. If information comes to light from hiding places or other sources, it will be considered a serious offense.

Recently, both peasants and townspeople have been conducting large-scale funerals inappropriate to their social status, and have also been erecting magnificent stone monuments in graveyards and attaching temple names and lay Buddhist names, which is improper. From now on, regarding funerals for peasants and townspeople, even for those of distinguished background or with notable lineage, no more than ten monks should be gathered, and elaborate ceremonies should not be conducted. Donations and offerings should also be made according to one's financial means.

Regarding grave monuments, even tall gravestones should not exceed four shaku in height, and temple names or lay Buddhist names should absolutely not be attached to posthumous names. Of course, existing stone monuments should be left as they are for now, but when repairs are needed in the future, the temple names and lay Buddhist names should be removed and the monuments replaced.
These instructions should be proclaimed without exception to all shogunal domains, private domains, and temple/shrine territories.
