(Continued from previous page) ...as it was designated for sale [to us], upon our petition, we were graciously instructed that [the forest] would be granted to us for four ryō in gold. However, regarding the nature of the government-designated forest [御立林], and with all due deference, ever since [we have lived on] the domain's granted lands, we have been able to carry out our duties as farmers in peace and security under your benevolent governance — a circumstance for which we are deeply and humbly grateful, attributing it entirely to your compassionate care. For this reason, we wish to offer [dedicate] the said forest back as a献山 [kenzan, dedication of forest land to the domain]. However, since the forest that was granted to us has been placed under the management of the Tadokoro [田所] office, we are in a state of hardship. Therefore, we wish to offer in its place a private mountain [持山] adjacent to the government forest as a substitute land,

and humbly petition to dedicate it as such. We most earnestly request that, through your benevolence, our petition be granted as stated, which would be a most grateful fortune.
