アヨツペ夷鎧の名なり按るに危き器と云訓なるべしれい木と皮を
合せて作る兜は夷製の物を見す本邦器を用ゆ戦争の時は
礼法もあるよし軍をトミと云挑の訓略なるべし
一北夷地トウベツ首長シリメキシユ甲冑拾余【領ヵ】を蔵す其中に異鎧
壱領あり閲するに緋縅と見ゆ其製古様殆類ひなき美
製次【頃ヵ】年画人春田静甫正応五年の写今様打掛鎧の図を
見せて云是延喜兵庫寮の記に所載打かけ鎧の図なり今は
絶てなしとなん右の異鐘類年を経し故に破損多しと
いへとも古の打かけ鎧なり蝦夷鎧は打かけ鑓の状を伝て
夷製すと見へたり
現代語訳
アヨツペとは夷（アイヌ）の鎧の名称である。考えるに、「危険な器具」という意味の訓読みであろう。木と皮を合わせて作る。兜については夷製のものは見当たらず、日本（本邦）の器具を用いている。戦争の際には礼法があるとのことで、軍勢のことをトミと言うが、これは「挑む」という語の訓を略したものであろう。
一、北夷地（北方の蝦夷地）のトウベツの首長シリメキシユは、甲冑十余領を所蔵している。その中に異国風の鎧が一領あり、拝見したところ緋縅（ひおどし）と見受けられる。その作りは古様で、比類なき美製である。近年、画人（絵師）の春田静甫が、正応五年の写しとされる今様打掛鎧の図を見せてくれて、こう言った。「これは延喜兵庫寮の記録に載っている打掛鎧の図であり、今では全く見られなくなったものである」と。右の異鎧は年月を経たゆえ破損が多いとはいえ、古の打掛鎧である。蝦夷の鎧は打掛鎧の形状を伝えて、アイヌが製作したものと思われる。

"Ayotsupe" is the name of Ainu armor. Upon reflection, this likely means "a dangerous instrument" in its reading. It is made by combining wood and hide. As for helmets, no Ainu-made examples have been seen; Japanese-made ones are used instead. It is said that there are proper protocols during warfare, and their forces are called "Tomi," which is likely an abbreviation of the reading of the word meaning "to challenge" (idamu).
Item: The chieftain Shirimekishyu of Tōbetsu in the northern Ezo lands possesses more than ten suits of armor. Among them is one suit of foreign-style armor, which upon inspection appears to be a hi-odoshi (red-laced) type. Its construction is of an ancient style and of incomparable fine workmanship. In recent years, the painter Haruta Seihō showed me a copy — dated to the fifth year of Shōō (1292) — of a diagram of a contemporary kakekake-style armor (hanging armor), saying: "This is a diagram of kakekake armor recorded in the Engi Hyōgorō records, and it is something that can no longer be found today." Although the aforementioned unusual armor has sustained much damage due to the passage of years, it is indeed an ancient kakekake-style armor. It appears that Ainu armor was made by the Ainu people, transmitting the form of the kakekake armor.
