ユーラツフ《割書：地｜名》首長ヤシマと云むかし神在て
此所の海に釣し大なる比目魚得給ひ夷
等に教曰此魚は神也我是を山に祭ん
此後此山のみ比目魚の形したる残雪有
べし其時汝等此海に漁せは多く比目魚を
得て糧と成んと云給ひしに今に至りて
神の言の如し故に旧ウアシシヤマンヘと云
しを転訛して今ヲヤマンヘといふウアシ
は雪の称《右線：シ》ヤマンヘは比目魚の訓也

ユーラップ（地名）の首長ヤシマという者が語るには、昔、神がこの地の海で釣りをして大きなヒラメを釣り上げ、アイヌの人々に教えて言うには「この魚は神である。私はこれを山に祭ろう。この後、この山にだけヒラメの形をした残雪があるだろう。その時、お前たちがこの海で漁をすれば、多くのヒラメを得て食料とすることができるだろう」と言われたが、今に至ってもその神の言葉の通りである。そのため、昔はウアシシャマンベと言っていたものが転訛して、今はオシャマンベと言う。ウアシは雪という意味、シャマンベはヒラメという意味である。

The chief of Yūrappu (place name) named Yashima tells that long ago, a god fished in the sea of this place and caught a large flatfish (halibut). The god taught the Ainu people, saying: "This fish is divine. I shall enshrine it on the mountain. Hereafter, only this mountain shall have remaining snow in the shape of a flatfish. When you see this, if you fish in this sea, you will catch many flatfish and they will serve as your food." This has remained true to this day, just as the god promised. Therefore, what was formerly called "Uashishamanbe" has been corrupted over time and is now called "Oshamanbe." "Uashi" means snow, and "shamanbe" means flatfish.
