現代語訳
シイヘ（鮭）は鮭のことである。奥地にとりわけ多い。初秋より河に遡上し、川岸に至ると河の水が濁る。雌魚は尾をもって河底を掃い、卵を放すと、雄魚が白子をかけるように、粘り気のある状態で魚卵が河底に付着し、流れ去ることがない。いかなる激流であっても、魚が遡上できない河はない。そのため、場所によっては非常に多くの魚が遡上するために、洪水が起きることもある。翌春、雪解け水と共に、卵は急速に稚魚となって大洋へと下る。その河で生まれた魚は、他の河へは遡上しないと言われている。

*Shiihe* (salmon) refers to the salmon fish. They are found in particularly great numbers in the interior regions. From early autumn, they ascend the rivers, and upon reaching the riverbanks, the river water becomes turbid. The female fish sweeps the riverbed with her tail and releases her eggs, whereupon the male fish deposits his milt over them; the eggs, being viscous in nature, adhere to the riverbed and are not carried away by the current. No matter how fierce the rapids, there is no river that the fish cannot ascend. For this reason, in some locations, such enormous numbers of fish ascend the rivers that flooding can occur. Come the following spring, together with the snowmelt waters, the eggs rapidly develop into fry and make their way down to the open sea. It is said that fish born in a particular river will never ascend any other river.
