現代語訳
**トカリ（水豹・アザラシ）**
水豹（アザラシ）のことである。大きさは五、六尺ほどで、全体が黒色であり、豹のような紋様に白い斑点が鮮明なものを「鼈甲斑」と呼び、最上品とされる。炭色（くすんだ色）のものが多く流通している。また一種として、全身に大きな水の字のような模様（波紋状の文理）があるものもいる。いずれも西方の蝦夷地、テシホ（天塩）の海辺に産する。
『東鑑』に曰く、仏師の運慶が仏像制作の材料として納めた品目の中に、「七間々中径の水豹皮六十枚」とある。
また、「トト」という海獣がいる。大きさは一丈を超え、色は（黒く）、頭はネズミに似ているという。その皮を綱（ロープ）に加工して用いると、切れることがない。油は灯明に用いられ、肉の味は鯨肉のように甘く美味しい。実物を見ていないため、ここでは図を掲載しない。

**Tokari (Mizuhyō / Azarashi – the Seal)**
This refers to the harbor/spotted seal (*azarashi*). It measures about five to six *shaku* in length. Its entire body is black, and those with clear leopard-like white spots are called "*bekko-han*" (tortoiseshell-spotted) and are considered the finest quality. Those of a charcoal-grey color are more commonly found. There is also a variety whose entire body bears a pattern resembling the character for "water" (波紋-like markings). All of these are found along the coastal shores of Teshio (*Teshio*), in the western Ezo territories.
The *Azuma Kagami* states that among the materials listed as offerings by the Buddhist sculptor Unkei for the crafting of Buddhist statues, there appear "sixty hides of water-leopard (*mizuhyō*/seal), measuring seven *ken* in center diameter."
There is also a sea creature called "*Toto*." It exceeds one *jō* in size, its color is dark, and its head is said to resemble that of a rat. When its hide is made into rope, it never breaks or frays. Its oil is used for lamp fuel, and the flavor of its meat is as sweet and delicious as whale meat. As the author has not seen the actual creature, no illustration is provided here.
