シコタン島に産する狐である。
毛色は淡い黒色である。

『続日本紀』に曰く——和銅五年七月、伊賀国の国司・阿直敬（あちのきよ）らが黒狐を献上した。すなわちこれを瑞祥（めでたいしるし）として上覧に供し、国司を始め以下の者たちに追って位階を授けた。

The *Shoku Nihongi* states: In the seventh month of the fifth year of Wadō (712 CE), the provincial governor of Iga Province, Achi no Kiyo and others, presented a black fox. This was immediately recognized as a felicitous omen and presented before the throne, and the provincial governor and those below him were subsequently awarded promotions in court rank.
