**ウルップ島とラッコについて**
ウルップ島（別名：ラッコ島とも呼ばれる）は、択捉島より東北へ二十里のところにある。以前、最上常矩が初めてこの島に渡り、地図を作成した。択捉島・国後島・キイタップ島のアイヌの人々は、初夏からこの島に渡り、猟虎（ラッコ）を獲る。
猟虎（ラッコ）は体の大きさが六尺から七尺ほどで、毛は厚く、縦横・上下の区別なく（毛並みの方向が一定でなく）生えており、色は紫がかった黒色である。毛皮の中でも上品とされている。
猟虎は海上に浮かんでいる時には、腹を上に向けて浮かんでいる。岩場（磯の岩）にも上がると言われている。
※「ラッコ」の音（発音）にもとづき、人々が「猟虎」という漢字を当てた。

**On Uruppu Island and the Sea Otter**
Uruppu Island (also known as Rakko Island) lies twenty *ri* to the northeast of Etorofu Island. In former times, Mogami Tsunenori was the first to cross to this island, where he produced a map. The Ainu people of Etorofu Island, Kunashiri Island, and Kiitappu Island cross to this island from early summer to hunt the *ryōko* (sea otter, *rakko*).
The sea otter measures some six to seven *shaku* in length. Its fur is thick, growing without distinction of direction — neither lengthwise, crosswise, nor up and down — and is of a purplish-black color. It is considered the finest among all pelts.
When sea otters float on the surface of the sea, they float belly-up. It is also said that they climb up onto rocky outcroppings.
